One important thing to remember is that no matter how old you are, it’s never too late to start a healthy oral routine.

  1. Visit your dentist twice a year for a regular check-up and cleaning. Make an appointment every six months. A good tip is to schedule your dental visit around your birthday, that way you always remember when your last visit was and when it’s time to go again.

  2. Brush your teeth at least two times a day (although getting an extra brush would be a great idea. So aim for three times a day to go that extra mile.)

  6. Drink more water throughout the day. Saliva protects your mouth from decay. As you get older your mouth gets dryer and the odds of tooth decay increase. Different medicines you take can also be a culprit, so drink lots of water.

  7. Chew on sugarless gum. Chewing gum is good for your teeth, if you can’t brush after you’ve eaten something, gum chewing can help get some of the food out. Chewing sugar-free gum has been shown to increase the flow of saliva which reduces plaque acid which strengthens the teeth, and reduces tooth decay.

  8. Incorporate oil pulling into your weekly routine. Read further below in this article for a list of why oil pulling is an effective way to draw toxins out of your body and improve your overall dental hygiene.

  9. It’s important to keep in mind that carbonated drinks and citrus fruits and juices contain acid. Sugary and starchy foods cause your mouth to make acid which contributes to wearing away the enamel on your teeth. FYI we really need enamel.

  10. Don’t smoke. Smoking stains your teeth yellow and causes bad breath. Smokers are three to six times more likely to develop gum disease or periodontal disease, which can attack roots and cause teeth to fall out.

Start with five minutes a day if you are starting. Remember that the oil will almost double in size as it draws in saliva as well as the toxins out, so swish gently.

While you can use sunflower or sesame oils, I much prefer to use coconut oil. Coconut oil has the added benefit of lauric acid, which is well-known for its antimicrobial agents. You should also brush your teeth and floss afterwards.

It’s best to swish on an empty stomach and first thing in the morning when you wake up and jump in the shower. It’s a peaceful time, and as a bonus you can think about the day ahead and swish away. You can’t talk and swish, that's stating the obvious, which is why the shower is a perfect time to oil pull.

Make oil pulling a normal part of my morning routine a few times a week in addition to our 10 things to improve your aging teeth. It's best to oil pull for about 15 minutes total.

Put one teaspoon of coconut oil in your mouth. It can be in solid or liquid form. It doesn’t matter. Our favorite brand is Nutiva, it’s certified as organic and non-GMO. It is also a virgin coconut oil that contains no cholesterol and is non-hydrogenated.

It's better to buy two bottles, one for your bathroom to oil pull and one for your kitchen to cook with. We also use it for a once-weekly as a hair treatment that works wonders. You get a lot of bang for your buck with coconut oil! So back to the oil pulling.

Swish it around in your mouth for at least ten minutes. Do not ingest the oil. Then when you are ready to spit out the oil, do so in a trash can, not a drain. You don’t want to clog up your drains. After all, oil and water don’t mix well and it's not good for the environment.
